Personal Statement

Computer games have always been an area of great interest to me, even from as young as four years old I have been playing computer games varying from the original lemmings, to doom. At the age of twelve I decided to begin investing how games were actually made. My curiosity quickly grew further and I began playing with basic authoring game engines such as “The 3D Game Maker”. Whilst I quickly grew bored due to the lack of customisation in these games, it did introduce me to concepts such as 3d models, textures and game scripts.

I then moved on to use an engine called “Explotations 32 bit” this is a 2D isometric engine. This was when I first began creating my own artwork for games. I got into using Bryce 5 and Poser 4 in order to create isometric sprites and environments for use with explorations. Having used this engine for over a year I then decided to help on an independent project (Legends of Aldeth) as lead artist. This involved rendering many game sprites and animating them. This project unfortunately failed after the project lead was forced to quit due to time constraints.

I then decided to move onto learning to model in 3D.I taught myself the basics of modelling, Unwrapping and texturing in a few months using online tutorials and various training DVD's and then joined another hobbyist development team as a 3D Modeller. I was fortunate to be working with several industry modellers on this project who by critiquing my work helped me improve my 3D Modelling skills allot faster, as well as introducing me to techniques about good mesh flow and topology to allot my models to be animated well. This project also failed as suitable funding was not acquired to allow the project to continue.

After a few more months of developing my 3D Skills I started work designing Assyria . Assyria is a single player game I am currently developing, leading a team of approximately 20. Working on Assyria has not only helped me improve my Modelling but has also given me experience in organisation and project management/ leadership. I feel my communication skills have improved because of this.

Assyria has also served as a good means of networking; the project was short listed in the Game Horizons: Game Academy competition which meant we got to pitch our idea to Eidos, Vivendi, Introversion, and Eutechnix. I also try to attend Game development conferences as a volunteer each year, attending GDC London last year, and the Develop in Brighton conference this year. We are currently working on completing the game demo and hope to pitch the idea to publishers in order to seek funding after this has been accomplished.

As well as games I also enjoy playing Guitar and have played since I was 8 years old. I enjoy playing football and going out with friends.
